Walking along the River Witham

Following the former Lincoln to Boston Railway Line, there is a perfect walking route that is hard track. The route leaves Lincoln alongside the River Witham and passes Bardney and Southrey on the way to Kirkstead Bridge near Woodhall Spa. This walk passes through fenland landscapes with long views and expansive skies.

The route also features a sculpture trail which includes artworks inspired by the poetry of Alfred, Lord Tennyson to commemorate the 200th anniversary of this former Poet Laureate who was born in Lincolnshire.

One advantage to this walk is that it is flat and almost entirely traffic-free and offers convenient exit points, so you can break it into a comfortable pleasant outing if you don’t want to travel the full distance, which is best done by cycle. You can start in Lincoln, which is easily accessible by bus from Hilltop Farm. Or you can drive and park up in Lincoln, before doing the section to Bardney, from where you can catch a bus back into the city. If you decide to make a full day’s outing on foot, you may decide to go on to Kirkstead Bridge, from where you can also catch a bus back into Lincoln.

The full 33 mile route continues on to Boston but unless you are cycling that is for another trip, although you can hire a bike at Bardney, which is 8 miles from the start in Lincoln.
