Stilt Sandpiper at Frampton Marsh

The Lincolnshire coastline and the open spaces of the Wash provide some of the finest wildlife spetacles in Europe during the autumn period. Black-tailed Godwits and Dunlin are now to be seen at Frampton Marsh near Boston, recently returned from their breeding grounds in Iceland and the Arctic. Pink-footed geese appear in large numbers in October and by November over 1000 Grey Seals land on the beach at Donna Nook to have their furry pups. For the keen observers there are nearly always rarities to be found. This month we found this Stilt Sandpiper flown in from America and feeding with other waders and giving great views on a sunny evening. As the autumn Atlantic storms gather pace on the west coast of Britain the sheltered Lincolnshire coast often provides an extended summer.
