With RAF Scampton, the home of the Dambusters, having been mothballed, the Red Arrows are now based 10 miles south, at Waddington. They also sometimes fly from nearby Cranwell. Much of the summer season they are away doing displays but on clear winter days they practise their routine nearby, usually for an hour or so in the mornings when conditions permit. The Red Arrows begin training for the forthcoming season almost as soon as the previous year has ended. Typically, winter training starts in October, with small groups of three or four aircraft formations, often only 30 metres apart from each other. Each pilot flies three sorties a day, five days a week, and the formations grow in aircraft number as training progresses.
