After the wettest winter in living memory in what is normally a relatively dry part of the country, our ponds are full and the early nesters are busy. None more so than this elusive Moorhen, which may lay two or three clutches of eggs over the summer period. Moorhens are familiar to most people in parks and village ponds, where they have become quite tame and accustomed to humans. Here in the open countryside they are much more nervous so taking a good picture can be challenging.
