Lincolnshire’s association with Viking settlers in the 9th century was marked in 1976 with the creation of a long distance walk that takes you from the Humber Bank in the north to Rutland Water to the south. This week’s BBC Countryfile covered a section on the Lincolnshire Wolds, from where you can get fantastic views across the county to the west. However, one of the easiest parts of the walk is along the old Roman Ermine Street and down the escarpment. You can join this part of the path by leaving your car in nearby Wellingore, enjoying traffic-free open countryside and picking up the Lincoln bus at Carlton Scroop to return to your car later in the day. A low cost day out on an interesting part of the Viking Way adjacent to your base here. Well worth a look during your stay at Hilltop Farm.
