Lincolnshire Lime Woods

The beautiful season of autumn is enhanced by maximum diversity of tree species. Locally at Hilltop Farm, the Field Maple with its golden yellow show is probably the finest. Between Lincoln and the Lincolnshire Wolds is a place well worth a visit, Chambers Wood. These small leaved lime woods in this area, with many other native species form a lovely autumnal mix.  Chambers Wood has been managed by the Forestry Commission for over eighty years and is open to the public. There has been progressive felling of the earlier pines (seen here harvested into 2.5 m lengths and neatly piled up ready for sale). These woods are now being gradually converted to a better mixture of native trees, much of it achieved by natural regeneration from existing stock. In the middle ages the woods were managed by coppicing of the hazel and lime for charcoal and other local use. This is particularly valuable for wildlife and the elusive Dormouse can be found here today. It is a great place for a walk and dogs on leads are permitted too.
