Christmas in Lincoln

This innovative Christmas tree bauble is part of the castle light show that is on display now until just before Christmas. Definitely worth a visit with the option of walking round the castle walls to gain a panoramic view of the city and far beyond on a clear night.

Nearby, a new shop on the Steep Hill near the Castle Square is cheekily exploiting the Lincoln Imp myth to sell hand crafted ornamental imps, each one unique.

According to legend, the Lincoln Imp was a creature sent by the devil to cause chaos in the cathedral. The imp and his companion arrived at the cathedral, intent on creating havoc. It is said that they broke furniture, tripped up the clergy, and caused mayhem throughout the cathedral. As the story goes, an angel appeared to stop the imps, turning one to stone while the other escaped.

The stone figure of the Lincoln Imp remains frozen in place, high up in the Angel Choir. You can still spot him there today. Over the centuries, the imp has become a symbol of the struggle between good and evil, a reminder of the cathedral’s spiritual power and the medieval practise of using stone carvings to convey moral lessons. Latterly it is probably better known symbol of the City and as the name of the Lincoln City Football team.
