The Lincoln Christmas Market has been scrapped after 40 years. The final decision was made after an executive meeting was held by the City of Lincoln Council on Monday, February 20. The market will be replaced with a new campaign, ‘Christmas in Lincoln,’ which will involve activities in the city centre and uphill Lincoln over the six-week period leading up to Christmas. The 2022 market was its busiest on record and created concerns about overcrowding, as over 320,000 people flocked to the city over the four-day period. Undoubtedly there is deep scepticism over the wisdom of this move and how it was possible for such a popular event to fail to make money for the city. However the Council said that they had made a loss, part of which could be attributed to the heavy policing costs. However presumably these will still be incurred for the new look six week pre-Christmas campaign. With or without the Christmas Market, Lincoln will continue to be an immensely impressive venue for visitors throughout the year, with the castle and cathedral square endowed with such interesting shops and restaurants and fantastic events being held in the castle grounds and in the cathedral itself.
