This monster tractor with its attached eight furrow reversible plough looks like a toy when viewed from above. Heavy machinery can do great damage to soil and its associated wildllife and also damage our country lanes. This tracked vehicle though, despite its heavy load, spreads the load over a much wider area and may have less impact, particularly if conditions are reasonably dry. One of the biggest problems with modern machinery though is its requirement for large fields to make the investment worthwhile. We still manage the conservation area with its small fields around Hilltop Farm with our 1970 25 hp tractor. From mowing to logging to moving picnic benches it remains highly versatile and useful.
